You’ve probably heard about electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and know that they’re usually very damaging to your health. But did you know there are good EMFs and bad EMFs? These good EMFs are called pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs), and PEMF therapy can be used together with other natural autoimmune disease treatments.
In this blog post I’ll discuss PEMFs, what they are, how they work and how they can benefit autoimmune patients. They’re especially beneficial for fatigue and autoimmune disease, as well as to get rid of pain. I’ll also go into who should not use PEFM therapy. But first, let’s address the difference between EMFs and PEMFs.
Bad EMFs and Good EMFs
So what makes an electromagnetic field good or bad? It has to do with the frequency, strength, and exposure. Harmful EMFs are high frequency, have short wave lengths, and penetrate the body constantly. Think EMFs from cell phones, WiFi routers, and microwaves.
On the other hand, good EMFs—in other words therapeutic PEMFs—are low frequency, have long wave lengths, and they’re pulsed, so they’re not continuous. Your body isn’t exposed to them constantly.
A microwave emits high frequency, short wave length EMFs that constantly penetrate the body and in doing so create heat that damages cells. Compare that to a PEMF therapy device emitting low-frequency, long-wavelength EMFs. PEMFs don’t heat up cells. PEMFs pass through the body to stimulate electrical and chemical processes that are already taking place in the tissues to promote cellular health and detoxification.
Consider that the EMFs coming from a microwave are around 100 million hertz, while those emitted by PEMF therapy devices are less than 100 hertz.
Some doctors such as chiropractors offer PEMF treatments. But PEMF devices such as the Bemer device are usually used at home since one or two treatments aren’t going to be enough to achieve your desired outcome. You’ll need to use the device regularly to get the benefits of PEMFs.
How Does PEMF Work?
Although PEMFs are relatively weak they have profound health benefits. They stimulate the electrical fields of our own cells and in doing so get them back on line.
PEMFs modulate inflammation. They regulate pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion to support a healthy and balanced inflammatory response. Cytokines are proteins that can either suppress or activate inflammation.
PEFM therapy helps injured tissues recover and increases cell communication. This type of therapy helps cells get the nutrients they need to produce energy. This means PEMFs enhance production of ATP, the body’s cellular fuel. When cells are healthier and they have healthier cell membranes they can also detox better to remove all the toxic substances building up inside them.
PEMF electromagnetic field therapy stimulates healthy cell function because all cells have an electromagnetic field. If your cells aren’t healthy, nothing else in your body will be healthy. Healthy cells are crucial as a good foundation for your organs and tissues and systems to work properly. All cells need electrical impulses to power the trillions of chemical reactions happening inside them every minute.
PEMF and Autoimmune Diseases
For autoimmune health, PEMFs have a lot of health benefits. Pain and low energy are two of the most common complaints in autoimmunity. Due to the anti-inflammatory effects of PEMFs, it’s ideal for autoimmune patients who want to get rid of pain. PEMF for pain is one of its most common applications. In addition, by stimulating cells to boost their energy production, PEMFs can also reduce fatigue and help autoimmune patients have more energy.
PEMF is the most effective when used together with other natural autoimmune disease treatments. Using it together with healthy diet and lifestyle changes leads to a better outcome. PEMF therapy can stimulate the cells, but if the nutrients required aren’t available the cells still won’t be able to heal.
Evidence that PEMF Works
There’s a surprising amount of research on PEMF therapy. Some—but not all studies—show it can reduce fatigue and pain and improve function in fibromyalgia patients. It also reduces inflammation and supports healthy joint tissue in rheumatoid arthritis. You’ll find a summary of research about PEMF therapy on DrPawluk.com.
Who Should Not Use PEMF Therapy?
PEMF treatments are safe for most people. If you’re wondering if PEMFs are dangerous, the answer is no. However, they are contraindicated in the following people:
• Chemotherapy patients. There is the theoretical possibility that because PEMF enhances cell growth and repair it could encourage the proliferation of cancer cells. However, more research is needed since some studies have found that PEMF can boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs.
• People with electrical implants such as pacemakers or insulin pumps. PEMF therapy could stop these devices from working.
• Pregnant women. No studies have been done on the safety of PEMF during pregnancy, so it’s best not to use this type of therapy if you’re having a baby.
Avoid Exposure to Harmful EMFs
At the same time as you’re tapping into the benefits of PEMFs, you’ll want to reduce exposure to harmful EMFs. Here are some ways to minimize your exposure:
• At night, put your cell phone in airplane mode and try not to sleep with it near you.
• Don’t carry your phone in your pocket.
• Don’t carry your phone tucked in your bra.
• Turn off the WiFi router at night.
• Place your cell phone in a Faraday bag, which reduces EMF exposure. These bags can also be used on WiFi routers.
• Don’t use Bluetooth headsets, which amplify EMF exposure. Use a wired headset instead.
• Ditch your microwave or significantly reduce the amount you use it. My family and I use a toaster oven, and only rarely use the microwave. There’s also a lunch box with a heating pad that can be plugged into the wall to slowly heat up the food so that you can turn it on an hour before lunch.
